Though Pham Hoang Anh was born and brought up in the northern port city of Hai Phong, the artist seems to have a deeper impression of Hue and its culture, which can be easily seen in his oil paintings. The works of the lecturer of the College of Fine Arts in Hue depict gent Buddhist nuns and lasses whose faces show different states of spirits. Anh says his works are about what he has seen and felt about the peacefulness of pagodas, royal tombs, the spiritual life, and the calmness of people in the former imperial city. It is no coincidence that Anh uses red and other hot colors in most of his paintings, as they are an expression of his great desire for finding a typical style that reflects his calm but enthusiastic character. Anh manages to make the most of his experience in embroidery and decoration for his paintings to make them look more vivid and harmonious between the landscape and people in the city the artist has been living in for more than 10 years.
